Thirty years in practice. No blog, no podcast, no book. Here is what changed my mind.
So why am I posting now? After being a LinkedIn member for years. Decades, actually.
Let me be brutally honest.
If I saw someone I knew about post an article, and they had been that digitally quiet - never posted here, or on Facebook, or Substack, or Instagram, or anywhere else - my critical, suspicious mind would go straight to one question. What are they trying to sell? I might even read the post, just so I could justify the suspicion.
So let's get it out of the way now, in my first ever post.
I am trying to sell you something.
Over the next few weeks, months and probably years - I can hear you sighing already - I will be selling, asking and quite possibly pleading for you to do one thing. Register your interest in reading my book, should I ever get it published.
Oh yes. I have written a book.
A book about what I believe can change the landscape of the mental health crisis that is destroying the happiness of so many in our world. Our young people especially. To put it bluntly, I am fed up with reading about, hearing about and sitting with the fallout of those so young ending their lives so early.
When you have had that many mothers collapse in front of you, heartbroken that they could not stop their child from dying, you realise you have to do something outside of the therapy room.
I have been in self help for nearly thirty years. Almost half my life. I have enjoyed a successful practice where my brand of therapy, coaching, guidance, whatever you want to call it, generated clients in the best way there is. Word of mouth. Previous clients telling their friends, their family and their colleagues what happened when they worked with me. I never needed a book, a blog, a post or a podcast to find clients. They came because someone else got a result.
So what has changed?
The task at hand has changed. Our future generations' happiness is at stake, and right now we are going to lose. Lose big time.
Which means I have had to put aside my disdain for everything I disliked about the self help industry. The gurus pontificating. The writing about how wonderful their own lives are. The grinning photograph on the back of the book. I have had to bite the bullet, face the ridicule and the rejection, and hope that maybe, just maybe, I could make a difference.
And for anyone who has never sat with one mother's mourning wail - if it saves one life, it is worth it.
Rebuilding the Village is a pragmatic concept. Implemented properly, I believe it is the strategy our world so desperately needs. Over the coming months my articles will be about those concepts, and about how together we could all make that difference. I will be setting out what thirty years has taught me about the difference that makes the difference.
So please. Register today. Help me get the book published, the concept launched, and the scale of help we need to turn this tide.
Thank you.
